BRIEF 01: PUBLICATION RESEARCH

After finding some contextual research on what I wanted to include in my publication, I decided to look into some publication designs that I thought would be relevant to my topic. I researched into a selection of studios and online books stores for visual inspiration.

A visual identity and look book for the Corazon Resort in Cabo San Lucas. Designed by the agency Weaver & Ledger. I really like the format of this publication as it's different from the generic format of travel — associated publications. I also think the layout is contemporary which will appeal to a student based audience.

Lauren Darla Carroll

The Triangulation of Happiness, a limited release, large format, B&W photography zine features personal photographs of her travels across small town USA. The clean layout and monochromatic colours allow the audience to focus on the detail and sights within the photography which works really well.

The mixture between photography and infographics makes the book informative and visually exciting. This is another thing I will have to consider in regards to my travel brief.

RoAndCo Studio

A booklet with thematic photographs based on the theme travel. The book is packaged within it's self which is something I could consider in regards to distribution. The perforated edge also is a great interactional feature for the audience encouraging them to ready the book.

The simplistic layout contrasting against the bold photographic images allows the audiece to focus on the visual quality of the places to travel. This is something that makes the publication really stand out and instantly identifiable on it's context.

Idea and visual identity for a travel guide to coastal cities around the world, but from a rather offbeat and alternative viewpoint that is slightly different from the usual glossy travel magazines that focus either on popular tourist attractions or luxury travel. I think the stock used here in really innovative and bold, which looks like sugar paper and acetate which makes it really tangible and interactive for the consumer. Also again the bold use of photography and type really works with the layout.

A publication created by Bjarke Nøhr Kristensen looking at travelling and surfing. The contrast between colour and monochromatic images in the publication really makes the images stand out and the unorthodox layout allows the viewer to read the pages easily but is still really different.

Redesigned by Wedge and Lever, Surf magazine creates a modern and slick publication with photography lead design. I really like the application of colour and fold out features within the publication that again, creates more user interaction.

Another Escape is an independently published magazine that is inspired by individuals who are creative and inquisitive about travel and lifestyle. Again the publication uses really bold photography and a simplistic layout to grasp audiences attention.

The Travel Almanac have released issue four of their A5 publication, The remaining pages in the 122 page magazine are filled with beautiful photos of the Icebergs in Disko Bay and gliders flying over Fayence. The publication experiments with different stocks and interesting positioning of type and image.

Considerations
  • Photography lead
  • Interactional features
  • Innovative format and folding features
  • A5?
  • Colour — Monochromatic — Both?
