BREIF 04: EVALUATION

Overview

I really enjoy doing work for clients as it's instant feedback that makes the design process quicker and making their ideas come to reality is something I find quite rewarding as a designer. Although this brief had the potential to be bigger I am happy with creating this logo, with the hopes of continuing branding this artist in the future.

What skills have you developed through this brief and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

For this brief I really experimented with colour and using a multiple tonal range which is something I haven't really used in my work this year. So making something that wasn't really minimal was beneficial in me experimenting with my design style.
I think using colour can be really difficult but with this brief I think it benefitted the design and reached the clients requirements and is something I can experiment with further in future projects

What approaches / methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

For design production I have developed my visual delivery to clients, I never use to send digital pdfs in a formatted way which I think really enhanced my professional presence. I also think by me doing this the client had a better experience interacting with the work which made brief so much easier to do.

Although I am not the best at drawing I think it's always beneficial to draw out type before experimenting with it digitally. I usually start brief with drawing out logo designs I think this method in design product allows me to consider the way type can be displayed effectively and legibly.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

Without me networking and contacting Leeds College of Music, I wouldn't have obtained this brief. So I think a strength of mine is being able to make connections with institutions to find work within my field of interest which is music.

I think I am continuing to build upon my strength of using type effectively, through it's arrangement and combining font's that work well together.

I will capitalise on these strengths by continuing to make connections and networking. Experimenting and taking on more branding briefs to improve my type and logo designs.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

I think a weakness in my work is time management, I've been working on this brief on and off and although I didn't receive any complaints from the client. I felt I could have produced it in a quicker time from when the brief was first discussed. I think this is just a person weakness that I identify with myself and I will address it by being more efficient with my work process.

Also I would have liked to produce more than a logo for this brief as I don't consider it to be really a substantial brief and although asking the client if I could do anything else, they didn't need anything. Although I could have extended the brief on my own, I had to consider the other projects I have on and if it would be beneficial. So in addressing this problem, I think by maintaining a good business relationship with the client it will allow me to be their go - to designer for future projects which will be really good for my practice.

Identify things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

Suggest more outcomes for a brief if I think it will benefit the client, so that I can create outcomes that will benefit my portfolio and practice. Aside from that I have really enjoyed this brief and will look forward to continuing working in this field of design.

BREIF 04: PRESENTATION BOARDS

BRIEF 04: CLIENT FEEDBACK - 02

From my logo adjustments I then selected 4 of the designs that I felt Tyron would like the most and send it him through a digital pdf.

I decided to choose 4 designs exploring all the different colour outcomes so that he had a visual variation that he could choose from and want to develop further.

Feedback

The feedback from the client was highly positive and felt rewarding to take someones idea's and create something they enjoy and resonate with.

From the logo's Tyron really liked two designs and wanted to use both for his branding, which I was happy for him to use and thought they were both bold designs that he use online and in print.

Contact —

In sending over the logo designs I ensure that he had both logo designs, backgrounds and png's so that he was able to use them at his own will. Another thing I wanted to consider was if the client wanted anything else creating to extend the brief further because I thought the design was really different from what I usually do and would be good to extend it further. However the client only wanted some photographic shot's which I tried to arrange with someone I knew, but unfortunately was too busy to do them.

Overview

Although the brief was a quick turn around and I was only asked to do a logo, I really enjoyed working with a lot of colour and decorative type. I also really enjoy working with clients and working to their demands as I feel with their input it allows the design process to progress quicker. Overall this was a really enjoyable brief and something that is within my feild of interest.

BRIEF 04: ADJUSTMENTS

From the clients feedback the main adjustments were with the colour, so he wanted something bright, bold and deep. Also from the visual references Tyron sent over there was a lot of iridescent tones, gradients and spill colours. So I decided to experiment with a range of techniques to achieve this.

Block Colour

I experimented with some bold primary colours and deep shades for my first set of variations, I decided to work with block colours initially because the logo is quite decorative so I wanted to consider other options so that a pattern or gradient wouldn't take away from the design.

Colour Text

hue: -180
saturation: +65

hue: -33
saturation: +65

hue: +139
saturation: +75

hue: -62
saturation: +75

From the first set of variations I showed Tyron, he really liked the gradient colours within the logo, but on the white background it took away from the rich colour. So with these developments I decided to use a black background and experiment with the hue and saturation of the gradient.

Spill Colour Background

For the spill colour designs I created gradients and used the liquidify tool and the blur tool to create this effect in Photoshop. I think with background more blurred it works better because it doesn't over power the logo.

Gradient Background

Lastly I experimented with a few gradients, use tonal and bright colours and white text to stand out.

Overview

Overall I think I created a range of different ways that colour could be used in regards to Tyron's visual style and requirements. Next I will send over some variations to hime for more feedback.

BRIEF 04: LEIF PODHAJSKY

Through my research I came across an album art artists Leif Podhajsky, who's work and visual style really caught my eye and would be a great source of influence for experimentation with colour.

Leif is an artist and Creative Director. His work explores themes of connectedness, the relevance of nature and the psychedelic experience. By utilising these subjects he attempts to inspire the viewer into a realignment with themselves and their surroundings. Leif creates artwork and design for a number of brands, record labels and musicians around the world.

In looking at Leifs work I was really influenced by his use of colour and pattern and thought this style would work really well for Tyron's branding and the style that has already been established.

Album Art

Overview

Leif's album art work uses a range of colours, textures and patterns, which would look really bold and engaging with Tyron's. I really love his use of vibrant and rich tones and this is something I could consider when incorporating colour into Tyron's logo.

BRIEF 04: COLOUR RESEARCH

This research is focusing on looking into colour pallets and how they can be applied, with reference from the clients imagery.

Client Imagery

The imagery provided uses a lot of iridescent and spill colours, although these images are photographic I think a pattern or gradient could be used with this design.

Gradients + Textures

I decided to research into different coloured gradients and textures for colour inspiration and how they could be created.

A Colour Book

The colour book has an array of gradients that explore fluid textures and 3D elements that are visually striking and work with the imagery that the client provided but in a more simplistic way.

Gradient Child

Gradient child uses digitally manipulated gradients that create multiple dimensions and glitches shapes, which looks really alternative and fresh, which fits in with Tyron's imagery and overall style. This is another way I could consider incorporating colour into the background and text.

Colourful

Colourful uses more simplistic gradients that would work really well within typography aswell. Due to the type already being quite decorative, I think this style would really suit to the overall visuals of the logo.

Shame wave displays more animated ways of how to use gradients, again using juxtaposing gradients could be something that would work and really stand out.

F A D I E N T

Taking on the clients imagery gradients use a multitude of patterns and colours and for a logo design I think this feature could work possible as a background or working within the text.

Colour Application

I decided to do some further research on how colour could be applied in context, looking at printed and digital material that works with gradients, bold colours and textures as a source of influence.

Overview

From my research I feel that I have come across a lot of ways I could apply colour to the logo, the main features that stand out to me is using block colours, gradients, coloured patterns. With these colour features identified I will now experiment with applying them further.
