BRIEF 08: EVALUATION

Overview

The end of year show brief was perfect for my practice and design development with interests in art direction. The collaborative group also shared similar interests and had experience which benefited the design process.

Getting shortlisted for the end of year show was a great experience and woking with staff and professionals in the industry informed my personal practice as a designer.

What skills have you developed through this brief and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

The skills obtained in this brief was working to a clients requirements, collaborating in a group and industry professionals which informed the development and out come of the brief.

These skills have been applied through pitching, negotiations and working to a set of guidelines that fit in with the Leeds college of art establishment.

What approaches / methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

The methods of design production was different from any other format i’ve worked in previously the rang of media and materials that were executed in this brief informed my practice through the different ways type can be displayed.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

The strengths in this project here working as a collaborative group to create strong and concept driven designs.

The work ethic of group was also really dedicating in delivering something innovative for e the brief and each member influenced another with the different ways in how they work. I will capitalise on this through working in more collaborative groups and maintain an enthusiastic and dedicated level of approach to design work.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

Time was a weakness although this was out of our hand due to the volume of work that needed to be submitted the final design wasn’t completely resolved for the final and still in the development stages.

Identify things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

Consider all feedback, but also to consider time and practicality of the feedback, in doing this the outcomes for the brief could have been done a lot quicker and to a higher standard that would have enabled us to win the pitch.

BRIEF 08: PRESENTATION BOARDS

BREIF 08: FINAL PRESENTATION

Feedback

Overall the feedback from the presentation was positive in what we had achieved in the time set, I think the things we could of developed further was the practicality of the design and adding more rich colour to make it stand out, which is what we initially proposed to do.

Evaluation

Although we didn't win the final pitch, overall I am really pleased with what my group has produced and the different angle in which we explored the brief. In doing this brief I have been able to create experimental 3d type and mixed media designs which is something I have never worked with before and will show diversity in my portfolio.

In doing this brief I have also learnt a lot of lessons, when working with industry professionals and taking on feedback.

I have really enjoyed working with an art direction angle and has heightened my interest in that field even more.

BRIEF 08: DIGITAL DEVELOPMENTS

One

 Two

Three

Four

After presenting some further digital developments, I presented them to the boys as process of elimination. From the designs the first development stood out to them the most and would be the digital alternative to use in the design.

BRIEF 08: EXPERIMENTAL TYPE DEVELOPMENTS

One

For the first concept we laser cut the type out of wood and acrylic to break the letterforms against bright backgrounds for the brief.

Finalisations

Two

The second concept was to create the type of out of plaster and to break the single letterforms, the process of this was created in fine art ceramics and is documented photographically below.

Feedback

In the development of our work we decided to send over some initial developments to Lee from Peter& Paul to get some feedback and see if we was going in the right direction. We then received a PDF of feedback on what we consider for the brief.

Three

From the feedback we decided to make a mould from the type using a more bolder font and following a similar process from process 2.

We the collaborated with Oscar from photography for some final photo's for the campaign experimenting with breaking the mould and trying to make it legible.

(then we worked the grave yard shift finalising designs for our pitch)

Overview

The developments for this brief has to created really quickly as we only had 2 days to create such large scale designs, but with working with the boys we created a selection of really interesting outcomes and I am really proud of our hard work and the enthusiasm in the group. We all worked really hard to push these ideas and follow the feedback from Lee, so hopefully it all pays off!
