BRIEF 11: EVALUATION

Overview

The process of creating a design for a industry professional is an amazing opportunity, however to consider who they are as a person and design something that communicates to their personal tastes and desires was quite a challenge
.

The research process significantly informed the design, as the client wasn't someone I could interview. So finding secondary sources was what fuelled the creative process.

What skills have you developed through this brief and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Working to a vague brief and trying to emulate what a person wants with little no information was quite difficult.
The research skills where applied effectively to the design through sourcing the designers passions in music in the form of a gig poster.

The design not only visually represented Ian Andersons interests but contextually linked to his personal life with the design sourcing the tour dates to his home town of Sheffield.

What approaches / methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

The methods of design production I have developed is my research skills, with only having a small knowledge about Ian as a designer, it was my task to find out who he was as a person and what he liked.

I tried a selection of secondary methods to find information about Ian through online interviews, videos and article which informed the design process through acknowledging his interest and formulating a design catered to him.
What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

The strengths within my work is working with type and imagery, this is something prevalent in my practice and I will capitalise on this by experimenting and progressing with it in every brief.

An alternative method of capitalisation would be to inform this practice by going to workshops to develop my skills further.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

A weakness I can Identify in my work is trying to alter imagery that is of a low DPI, in some cases the artwork can look quite pixilated but due to the imagery being quite old it was hard to source it at a high resolution

To address this in the future I will consider alternative imagery to use or look into workshops that can inform me on how to restore older images to ensure my work is print and web safe.

Identify things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

I would possibly think of an alternative method of delivery aside from email, although the design was successful, I think I could of printed out the design and personally sent it to Ian.

Finally, to not get shingles and miss the workshop! :(

BRIEF 11: WORKSHOP

After being selected to do the workshop, I was really happy to be invited along to work with Ian and to see what challenge he had for us.

Brief 02

Make something pointless for an hour, document it and present it. A learning opportunity workshop. Key thing it to show how pointless you task was.

Presentation

Clear, concise, thinking what you present should be as good as what your making.
What you present should be as good as what your making.
Think outside the box.
Know your enemy — the client
Tell a story and developing some narrative.
Always ask yourself why?!
What does the client really want
Creating trust with client.

Challenging ideas, 5 minuets long

1. Documentation
2. Pointless
3. Presentation

Most important if you can't present your work theres no point, It increases its importance. This is what it does and how it got there. People are not always going to wait for the punchline

Overview

Unfortunately during the session and for the past few days I had shingles, although I wanted to do the brief, I felt really ill and couldn't continue with the next few sessions. With missing the session I felt that I couldn't continue working on this workshop and was disappointed, also I chose to discontinue this workshop due to the amount of other work I had to do in regards to my dissertation. Although it wasn't the outcome i'd hoped, I am happy that I was selected for the workshop and had a little time to sit and talk with Ian.

BRIEF 11: TDR

For one of the briefs set by TDR, the objective is to create something that Ian Anderson would 'Cherish Forever'.

Brief

—give me something i'll want to keep forever.

tip — remember this is primarily a design communication design thinking workshop.

ok

researching me to make informed decisions
lateral thinking — what is it that I (ME) would / could cherish forever

if it's made / realised then all the better.
if it needs explaining, then you should find a way to explain it in the context of the piece rather than as a note attached to it as an excuse for not putting that thinking into the work.

With the brief established I then decided to think about things that I would myself personally.

After Identifying this I the decided to research further into Ian Anderson personally to get an idea of what he would appreciate, looking at his artwork and interviews.

From the interviews and the brainstorm I created I found that he had a history in designing for music and also found some of his favourite bands. With this connection between my personal practice and what he liked I decided to create a music gig poster.

I chose Cabaret Voltaire because I really liked the artwork they had used in their designs and obviously because he was a fan of theirs. I didn't want to design something that was like things he has produced because I didn't think that it would meet the brief.

With this in mind I decided to incorporate the bands artwork, his colour scheme from his website and the dates they performed in Sheffield to make it more personal to him. Below are some variations I came up with while developing the design incorporating my own style also.

From all of my designs I refined my ideas to this piece, I chose this design because it was the most refined and had all the elements I think neccesary for the design.

I sent Ian an email of the work and hopefully I will get to go to the workshop.

Although it seemed hard at first, I thought that this brief was really interesting in trying to interpret someones interests even though I have never met or spoke to them before. Although it was challenging I found some common ground between myself and the designer and used this to my advantage for my design. I am really pleased with my final outcome and wouldn't like to know his thoughts on what I created. Also this is another small brief finished and was beneficial in boosting my creativity for other projects.
